PAYE-SDL-UIF

Register as an Employer With SARS Before You Run Your First Payroll

Register your company for PAYE, SDL, and UIF with SARS. Express Shelf Company handles the employer registration process so your payroll compliance starts properly.

PAYE, SDL and UIF Registration South Africa

You are about to hire your first employee. Or you are already paying staff casually, off the books, and the auditor has flagged it. Or your accountant has told you the company should have been registered as an employer months ago.

The moment you employ someone and their salary exceeds the tax threshold, the law requires you to register with SARS for PAYE, SDL, and UIF.

These are three separate registrations on the same SARS profile, all triggered by employment. Get it done before payroll, or you risk running an undeclared payroll with all the compliance problems that come with it.

Express Shelf Company lodges PAYE, SDL, and UIF registrations together for South African (Pty) Ltd companies, Inc companies, NPCs, and Close Corporations.

What Are PAYE, SDL, and UIF?

PAYE, SDL, and UIF are three separate employment-related registrations with SARS.

They are normally lodged together when the taxable payroll threshold is met.

PAYE, Pay As You Earn, is the income tax you withhold from your employees’ salaries each month and pay over to SARS on their behalf.

SDL, Skills Development Levy, is a levy on payroll that funds national skills development.

UIF, Unemployment Insurance Fund, contributions are paid by both the employer and employee on each salary, funding unemployment, maternity, illness, and dependant benefits.

All three are administered through your SARS eFiling profile, with the EMP201 monthly return.

When You Need to Register

You should register before you process your first payroll.

You need this service if:

  • You are about to hire your first employee
  • You employ full-time, part-time, or fixed-term staff
  • You currently pay people informally and want to formalise payroll
  • Your auditor has flagged that the company should be registered as an employer
  • You are bidding on a tender that requires employer registration
  • You need payroll compliance in place for COIDA or a Letter of Good Standing

Late registration is usually more expensive and stressful than registering correctly from the start.

How It Works

We have made this as effortless as possible. The whole application is handled on your behalf.

Step 1: Tell Us About Your Payroll

A short conversation helps us understand your number of employees, expected payroll size, and when you need to start running payroll.

Step 2: We Lodge With SARS

Express Shelf Company prepares and lodges the PAYE, SDL, and UIF applications together, with the supporting documents in place.

Step 3: SARS Issues Confirmation

Confirmation of registration lands in your inbox. Your eFiling profile is enabled for EMP201 monthly returns.

Step 4: Run Payroll Properly

You can process payroll, withhold PAYE and UIF, accrue SDL, and submit your first EMP201. We can guide you on the moving parts.

Why Use Express Shelf Company for Employer Registration?

PAYE, SDL, and UIF registrations are individually simple and collectively annoying.

SARS, UIF, and eFiling enablement all need to line up. Mismatched information between them creates chronic compliance friction that can cost time every month.

Express Shelf Company gives you:

  • All three registrations lodged together
  • SARS profile kept internally consistent
  • EMP201 enabled and ready for monthly submissions
  • Practical guidance on PAYE, SDL, and UIF on payroll
  • A natural follow-up into COIDA registration and Letter of Good Standing support
  • Hands-on follow-up at SARS if anything stalls

Payroll runs cleanly. Compliance is on the rails. That is the difference.

Do I Need to Register for PAYE If I Only Have One Employee?

Yes, generally. PAYE is required for any employee whose remuneration is taxable.

Even one taxable employee can trigger the registration requirement.

What If I Am the Only Person in the Company and Paying Myself?

Owner-directors who draw a salary as employees of their own company should usually register for PAYE.

Owner-directors who only draw dividends or director’s fees may have a different setup. Speak to a tax adviser about the cleanest structure.

Is SDL Always Required?

SDL usually applies where the employer’s payroll exceeds the relevant threshold.

We help confirm whether SDL applies based on your payroll position.

Is UIF the Same as PAYE?

No. PAYE is employee income tax withheld and paid to SARS.

UIF is a contribution that supports unemployment, maternity, illness, and dependant benefits.

What Is EMP201?

EMP201 is the monthly SARS return used to declare PAYE, SDL, and UIF amounts for the month.

Once registered as an employer, your company must submit EMP201 returns where required.

Can I Register Late?

Yes, but late registration can create backdated compliance issues, penalties, or catch-up submissions.

It is better to register before payroll starts.
