Income Tax Registration for Trusts, NPOs and Companies in South Africa

Trusts, non-profit organisations, and non-profit companies each need their own SARS income tax profile. So do (Pty) Ltd companies, Inc companies, and Close Corporations.

Unlike a private company, a Trust or NPO does not have its tax number issued automatically. The registration is done manually with SARS after the entity is formed.

Without an active income tax number, a Trust cannot file IT12TR returns, an NPO cannot apply for tax-exempt status, and no entity can register for VAT, PAYE, Section 18A donation status, or other SARS profiles that build on top of it.

Express Shelf Company registers Trusts, NPOs, NPCs, (Pty) Ltd companies, Inc companies, and Close Corporations for income tax at SARS.

Where the entity qualifies, we also handle the Section 30 PBO approval and Section 18A donation receipt status that non-profits need to operate properly.

What Is Income Tax Registration?

Income tax registration is the SARS process that creates an active income tax profile for the entity.

For a Trust, it follows the Letters of Authority issued by the Master of the High Court. For an NPO or NPC, it follows formation of the entity, and for NPOs, registration with the Department of Social Development. For a (Pty) Ltd, Inc, or Close Corporation, it follows CIPC registration.

A correctly registered SARS profile lets the entity:

  • File the right annual return, including IT12TR, ITR14, or ITR12EI where applicable
  • Submit IRP6 provisional tax returns where required
  • Apply for tax-exempt status and PBO approval under Section 30
  • Apply for Section 18A status to issue donation receipts
  • Apply for VAT, PAYE, customs, and other SARS registrations
  • Apply for tax clearance and SARS compliance status confirmation
  • Open a business bank account that requires a SARS profile

Without it, every other SARS interaction has a gap.

When You Need This Service

You need income tax registration or activation when the SARS profile is missing, inactive, not linked, or required before another SARS process can continue.

You Have Just Registered a Trust and Need It on the SARS System

A new Trust does not get an income tax number automatically.

Once the Master of the High Court issues the Letters of Authority, the SARS profile has to be registered manually.

Express Shelf Company handles the registration and links the representative taxpayer, usually a trustee or appointed practitioner.

Your NPO Has Its DSD Registration Number and Now Needs SARS Tax Exemption

An NPO is not automatically tax exempt.

After the Department of Social Development issues the NPO number, the entity still has to register for income tax at SARS, apply for PBO approval under Section 30, and then apply for Section 18A status if it wants to issue donation receipts.

Express Shelf Company packages the process so nothing slips.

You Run a Non-Profit Company and Need Tax-Exempt Treatment

NPCs registered with CIPC follow a similar SARS path.

Income tax registration comes first, then PBO approval under Section 30, then Section 18A status where the NPC wants to issue deductible donation receipts.

Express Shelf Company lodges the applications and follows up with SARS until the approval letters are issued.

You Are Buying or Have Bought a Shelf Company

Shelf entities may come with valid tax numbers, but the SARS profile often needs updating once directors or the representative taxpayer change.

Express Shelf Company refreshes the profile so eFiling works under the new control.

You Have Found an Old Tax Number That Does Not Work on eFiling

Older Trusts and companies sometimes have legacy SARS numbers that cannot be linked to a modern eFiling profile.

Express Shelf Company works with SARS to reactivate or re-register the entity so it functions properly on eFiling again.

Your Newly Registered Company Did Not Receive a Tax Number

CIPC and SARS exchange data, but the link does not always result in an active SARS profile.

Express Shelf Company completes the registration manually so the tax number is issued and active.

You Are Trying to Register for VAT or PAYE and the System Will Not Accept the Entity

Most secondary SARS registrations require an active income tax number.

If VAT, PAYE, customs, or other SARS registrations are bouncing, income tax registration may be the missing link.

How It Works

We have made this as effortless as possible. The whole process is handled on your behalf.

Step 1: Tell Us About the Entity

A short conversation helps us understand whether it is a new Trust, an NPO with a DSD number, an NPC that has just registered, a shelf company, or an existing entity with a SARS profile that has stopped working.

Step 2: We Lodge or Activate at SARS

Express Shelf Company prepares the registration or activation paperwork, links the eFiling profile, registers the representative taxpayer, and lodges everything with SARS.

For NPOs and NPCs, the Section 30 PBO and Section 18A applications can move through the same workflow.

Step 3: SARS Issues the Tax Number and Approvals

A working income tax number lands on the SARS profile, with eFiling enabled.

For NPOs and NPCs, the Tax-Exempt Institution letter and Section 18A approval follow where applicable.

Step 4: You File, Issue Receipts, and Move Forward

IT12TR, ITR14, ITR12EI, IRP6, VAT, PAYE, and other follow-on registrations are now possible.

Donation receipts can be issued where Section 18A has been approved. The tax compliance pipeline is open.

Why Use Express Shelf Company for Income Tax Registration?

Income tax registration is supposed to be one of the simplest SARS interactions.

In practice, missing data, misaligned records, and broken links between CIPC, the Master, DSD, and SARS can turn it into the process that holds up everything else.

Express Shelf Company gives you:

  • Income tax registration lodged correctly for the entity type
  • Section 30 PBO and Section 18A applications handled for NPOs and NPCs
  • eFiling profile set up so secondary registrations can move forward
  • Registered representative or representative taxpayer checked
  • Active follow-up with SARS where the profile stalls
  • Practical guidance on the next SARS obligations

The SARS profile works. The next registration can move. That is the difference.

Does a New Company Automatically Get a SARS Income Tax Number?

Most newly registered companies receive an income tax number from SARS automatically after CIPC registration.

Sometimes the number does not arrive, or the profile is not active. Express Shelf Company can register or activate it manually where needed.

Do Trusts Automatically Get a SARS Tax Number?

No. A Trust must be registered manually with SARS after the Master of the High Court issues the Letters of Authority.

Do NPOs and NPCs Need Income Tax Registration?

Yes. NPOs and NPCs need income tax registration before they can apply for tax-exempt status, PBO approval, or Section 18A donation receipt status.

What Is Section 30 PBO Approval?

Section 30 approval is SARS recognition of the entity as a Public Benefit Organisation.

This is an important step for non-profit entities that want tax-exempt treatment.

What Is Section 18A Status?

Section 18A status allows an approved organisation to issue donation receipts that donors can use to claim a tax deduction.

Not every non-profit automatically qualifies. The application must be lodged with SARS.

Why Is My SARS Tax Number Not Working on eFiling?

The profile may not be linked, the representative may be missing, or the entity may have an old or inactive SARS record.

Express Shelf Company can help investigate and refresh the SARS profile.
